If you are a reader of this blog, you may already know which is going to be my answer… In previous posts, I already explain why should you do your advance diver course before going on vacations.
In any case, I should recognize that in this blog and in the diving world in general, there is a main trend to promote more and more courses: it looks like that if you are not a tec diver, you do not know how to dive… or you should do all kinds of specialties if you want to be a good diver. However, the reality, as I said in this blog, that everything depends on what are your expectations and how much money and time you want to invest.
In fact, if you are just a diver (not a photsub) just the advance and eanx would give open you 99% of all recreational diving sites. You just need practice. Advance? Because lots of places have dive sites deeper than 18 m and if you do not have it, they would not let you go down. Their insurances and agencies wouldn´t cover any accident that would be deeper than the recommended depth of your dive certification. And eanx because if you actually want to do lots of repetitive dives, would help you a lot in order to have decent bottom times (if you use eanx, you may increase your NDL by a good amount), as i explained here.
The rest 1% of dive sites are very special: some are really deep (between 30 and 40, but most places would accept you diving there as long as you have lots of deep diving experience without your deep diving course), some have lots of currents or other specificities that would need special knowledge (for example, I ask for wreck diving specialty if they want to do penetrations in my shipwrecks, as I explained here). The rest of courses, just do them only if you want to improve your diving skills, but before doing them, you should actually know that you do them because you actually want to learn, not because they would open you new diving sites.
However, if you are a photosub or a videosub, you should increase your knowledge quite a lot more. You should do your rescue diver and your solo diving course, as was explained here. If not, you may put yourself in danger without even realizing it…

¿Qué cursos debo tener para irme de vacaciones de buceo?
Si eres un lector de este blog, puede que ya conozcas la respuesta a este pregunta… en entradas previas, ya expliqué porqué tenías que hacer el avanzado si eres un buceador de vacaciones.
En cualquier caso, debo reconocer que en este blog y en general hay una presión para promover el hacer más y más cursos: parecería que si no eres tec no eres un buen buceador… o que deberías hacer todo tipo de cursos de especialidad. Sin embargo, la realidad es, como ya dije anteriormente, que todo depende de las expectativas y de cuanto tiempo y dinero quieres invertir.
De hecho, si eres simplemente un buceador (no un fotosub o videosub) el avanzado y eanx te abrirían el 99% de los sitios de buceo recreativo. Sólo necesitas práctica. ¿Avanzado? Porque mucho sitios de buceo están entre 18 y 30 m y no muchos centros no te van a dejar bajar con ellos. El motivo es que tanto los seguros como las agencias puede que no les cubran en caso de que haya un accidente por debajo de la profundidad máxima recomendada por las agencias. Y eanx porque si realmente vas a hacer inmersiones repetitivas, te ayudarán mucho para tener un límite de descompresión decente en tus inmersiones repetitivas (el eanx aumentará mucho tu LND), como expliqué aquí.
El 1% de los sitios de buceo restantes son muy especiales: algunos son muy profundos (entre 30 y 40 m, pero en la inmensa mayoría de lo sitios no te exigirán la especialidad de profundidad siempre y cuando tengas mucha experiencia en inmersiones profundas), algunas tienen muchas corrientes u otras especialidades que necesitas un conocimientos especiales (por ejemplo,yo exijo tener especialidad de pecios para hacer penetraciones, como expliqué aquí). El resto de los cursos debes hacerlo si quieres mejorar tus conocimientos. Pero antes de hacerlos, debes saber que los haces porque quieres aprender, no porque te vayan a abrir nuevos sitios de buceo.
Sin embargo, si eres un fotosub o un videosub, deberías incrementar tu conocimiento mucho más. Deberías hacer tu buceador de rescate puesto que deberías ser un buceador en solitario, como se explicó aquí. Si no, te pondrías en peligro sin siquiera darte cuenta…
