I know it sounds kind of presumptuous to tell someone which course should he do if he is a photographer, mostly because I can teach everything except underwater photography (I’m the worst photographer ever), but I guided quite a good number of photographers while working as a divemaster or instructor. And I should say, some of them are a real pain: they make the group go slower, doesn’t care about staying with the group or the organization of the dive. Some of them only care about the perfect picture.

Apart from the normal courses that you have already done, like underwater photography, maybe you would have thought on doing rebreathers (so no bubbles scaring fishes), nitrox to stay longer, fish ID or underwater naturalists so you know what are you photographing…

However, I will talk about a different course: Self reliant diver. You may ask why in this world should you do this course? Basically, because you do most of your dives alone. Unless you have a wife or husband well “trained” and able to wait for you in every dive, you actually do all your dives alone. Most likely your buddy gets bored of waiting for you, getting away from the divemaster and the rest of divers so, after a while, he would leave you alone (or if it’s a photographer himself he would be on his own also). You would most likely keep an eye on the group but actually dive 20-30 m away. If anything happens (out of air, big failure on the air system, getting entangled, etc.) you are on your own. There is no way you would reach them on time, ascending fast will provoke decompression sickness, and it’s possible that the divemaster looses you in the dive.

And this is why this course is good for you: it helps you to learn how to carry a small additional air system, positioning of knifes, how to launch a buoy properly, properly plan your dives, be self-sufficient in case of need, etc. If you are actually diving alone, you should have the training to do so. Don’t you think so?

All your experience, training, and dives wouldn’t help you if you are at 30 m and do not have any air to breathe. I know the chances are not very high, but it may happen to you. And if it does, better to be prepared. The cost of equipment (like a 1lt pony bottle -at least, spare air is too little air- and a knife) is not more than a couple hundreds euros and a couple of kilos in your luggage. Isn’t it worth it just to be safe in all your dives?

¿Qué curso deberías hacer si haces fotosub o videosub?

Ya sé que suena presuntuoso decir a alguien que curso debe hacer si es un fotógrafo, sobre todo porque yo puedo enseñar de todo menos fotografía subacuática (soy el peor fotógrafo de la historia), pero he llevado a un buen numero de fotógrafos como divemaster o instructor. Y debo decir que algunos de ellos son realmente un dolor: hacen que el grupo vaya mas despacio, no les importa alejarse del grupo o la organización de la inmersión. Algunos de ellos solo les importa la foto perfecta…

Además de los cursos de fotografía que habrás hecho, quizás hayas pensado en hacer recicladores (sin burbujas hay mas peces cerca), nitrox para estar mas tiempo, identificación de peces o naturalista subacuático para conocer lo que estás fotografiando…

Sin embargo, yo voy a hablar sobre un curso diferente: buceador autosuficiente. Puedes preguntarte porque demonios recomiendo encarecidamente hacer este curso. Pues porque lo mas probable es que hagas la mayor parte de tus inmersiones sólo. A menos que tengas una esposa o esposo bien enseñado y capaz de esperar por ti en cada inmersión, en realidad haces la mayor parte de las inmersiones solo. Lo mas probable es que tu compañero se aburra de esperarte, de estar lejos del divemaster o del grupo, asi que terminará abandonándote (o si es otro fotógrafo, estará a su rollo). Lo más probable es que mantengas a distancia al grupo (le tengas a unos 20 o 30 m). Si algo ocurre (quedarte sin aire, se rompe tu regulador, te enganchas, etc.) estarás sólo. No hay forma de que les alcances a tiempo y es incluso posible que el divemaster te pierda si te paras.

Y es por esta razón por lo que este curso es tan útil para ti: te enseña a llevar una botella adicional pequeña, cómo colocar los cuchillos, cómo lanzar una boya adecuadamente, planificar correctamente tu inmersión, y en breve, a ser completamente autosuficiente. Si de hecho buceas sólo, ¿no deberías formarte para hacerlo adecuadamente?

Toda tu experiencia, formación, e inmersiones no te van a ayudar si estas a 30 m y no tienes aire que respirar. Ya sé que las probabilidades no son muy altas, pero puede ocurrir. Y si lo hace, mejor estar preparado. El coste del equipamiento (una botella de un litro al menos -spare air es demasiado escaso para inmersiones mayores de 18m – y un segundo cuchillo) no son mas de 200 euros y un par de kilos en tu maleta. ¿No crees que lo merece para estar seguro en todas tus inmersiones?
