Even though we have learnt that your octo should go in your right side and the computer should be on your left side, the french do it otherwise. Clockwise, starting on your left, you would connect the power inflator in the top LP port, below that, your octo. Then on your right side, you would connect the in th HP port, and above it the primary regulator (left and right based on the jacket worn on you).

From my point of view, this makes lots of sense an if you could change the configuration of your recreational dive team, you would make sharing gas lots easier and more comfortable. Just try.

Why? Because when you have to provide gas, the regulator comes naturally, you do not have to twist it to provide air: it will always come on the right position (if you provide from your left side, it has to be twisted unless you want to use it upside down. Also, if you want to swim close to you buddy sharing air, with the french configuration it´s pretty easy…

Also the octo lies in front of the right side of your buddy, so in case you need it, it´s quite straight forward to reach. There may be a reason why in the rest of the world we use the “normal” configuration. The only reason I found out is that you should use your left hand to provide air, instead of your right. However, you may train it and (in fact you may use your right hand to pass the hose over your left shoulder) but the advantages of being able to swim close by when sharing air are much more important to me,

Try it once and you would see. It´s quite fast and easy to get use to the new position of the computer and the octo… a few dives and a few practices and you would do it as a second nature.

Configuración francesa

A pesar de que hemos aprendido que el octo debe ir siempre en tu lado derecho y tu ordenador en el izquierdo, los franceses lo hacen al revés. Así, empezando por tu lado izquierdo, los franceses conectan su inflador en el puerto de baja presión superior. Debajo de él, conectan en otro puerto de baja presión su octo. En el lado derecho, en el de baja presión conectan su regulador primario y debajo de él, en el de alta presión, su ordenador (posición izquierda derecha basada en la posición que quedaría en tu cuerpo con la chaqueta puesta)

Desde mi punto de vista, esto tiene mucho sentido y si puedes cambiar la configuración de tu grupo de buceo recreativo a la francesa, verás que dar aire en caso de necesidad es mucho más sencillo. Sólo pruébalo.

¿Por qué? Porque cuando debes dar aire a tu compañero, el regulador llega en la posición correcta a su boca, sin necesidad de retorcerlo (si lo haces desde la derecha, a menos que lo entregues en la posición incorrecta, el latiguillo debe hacer una curva). Además, si quieres nadar cerca de tu compañero compartiendo aire, con la configuración francesa es mucho más sencillo y cómodo.

Además, el octo está al alcance de la mano derecha de tu compañero, lo que lo hace más fácil de alcanzar. La única razón que he encontrado para seguir con la configuración “normal” es que para proveer aire puedes usar tu mano derecha, mientras que en la francesa usarías la izquierda. Este movimiento se entrena muy fácilmente e incluso puedes ayudarte de la derecha para pasar el latiguillo por encima de tu hombro izquierdo. Para mi las ventajas son mayores que las desventajas.

Pruébalo y verás. Es fácil acostumbrarse a la nueva posición del ordenador y del octo… y en unas cuantas inmersiones y prácticas verás que se convierte en una segunda naturaleza.
