I´ve written about this topic a few times, but never on the blog. Nowadays, I feel there is a tendency of doing everything perfect without investing the time and the effort needed to get it. We want to be the best diver… but diving only a few times a year. We want to get the best training…at the cheapest price and without much effort. And this is a big problem in diving.

When I started diving, being just a diver was good enough. Not anymore: now you have to dive DIR, getting this or that computer, diving sidemount and so on. However, in order to do so, you have to invest lots of time and money. And most of the divers are not willing to do so.

If you just dive a few times a year, do lots of other things, just an advance open water and Eanx certified is good enough. Any agency would be perfect for you, as long as you have a decent to good instructor. A week time investment, 1000 USD and you may have a lifetime enjoyment diving in the best diving spots. Your trim, position, finning, etc. may not be perfect but would be good enough to have a pleasant time and enjoy yourself… as long as you respect the rules and do not kick anything and stay at your level, without trying something crazy (diving with a DM would help a lot).

If you really want to invest in diving and improve all those aspects, then you have a entire new world with different agencies, tec diving and improvements that could help you to get as far as you want. Being a DIR diver only means you spent the time and the money to get there, you may be a more efficient diver but doesn´t make much difference if you dive in a shallow reef.

In any case, both choices are good for me. And instructors and the rest of the diver community has to accept it. If I get a very advanced diver, I tried to get the best from me to teach him something he may not now. If I get a not so interested diver, I try to get the best for me to fulfill his needs. If he just want to dive in a nice place, I make sure he is the best he can be without forcing him to become something he doesn´t want to.

Lately, this simple idea has become more and more complicated. More and more divers disrespect those divers that has not chosen to become DIR or very advanced divers, without realizing that those are the divers that are paying to keep the dive sites open.

So, think about yourself, decide what you want to become as a diver and go for it.. letting the others dive however they want. The word stroke has made lots of damage to this world. No matter if you just want to dive in beautiful reefs or if you want to go down to 100 m. Any choice is good and everybody should respect that. If you dive 200 a year, do not disrespect a yearly diver: just help him to improve.

Piensa en lo que estas dispuesto a invertir antes de formarte

Ya he escrito sobre este tema algunas veces, pero nunca en el blog. Actualmente, siento que existe una tendencia a hacer todo perfecto pero sin invertir el tiempo y el esfuerzo necesario para conseguirlo. Queremos ser los mejores buceadores… pero buceando sólo en verano. Queremos la mejor formación… pero que también sea la más barata y que no nos requiera ningún esfuerzo. Y esto es un problema en el buceo.

Cuando empecé a bucear, ser un simple buceador era suficiente. Ya no: ahora tienes que bucear DIR, comprar ese ordenador espectacular, bucear con montaje lateral o ser técnico. Sin embargo, para conseguirlo, has de invertir una gran cantidad de dinero y de tiempo. Y la mayoría de los buceadores no está dispuesto a hacerlo.

Si sólo buceas unas pocas veces al año o tienes otras muchas aficiones, una titulación de avanzado y Eanx es más que suficiente. Y cualquier agencia será buena para ti, siempre y cuando lo hagas con un instructor decente. Una inversión de una semana, 1000 euros y tienes toda una vida para disfrutar de tu buceo en sitios hermosos. Tu trimado, posición, aleteo… puede que no sean perfectos pero serán lo suficientemente buenos para disfrutar de tu inmersión… siempre y cuando respetes las reglas básicas, cómo son el no golpear el fondo y ser consciente de tu nivel (si buceas poco, un DM en todas tus inmersiones te ayudará mucho), sin intentar ninguna locura.

Si realmente quieres invertir en buceo y mejorar todos esos aspectos, entonces entras en un mundo diferente con agencias, buceo técnico y mejoras que pueden llevarte tan lejos como tú quieras. Ser DIR sólo significa que has invertido el tiempo y el dinero necesario para llegar allí, puede que seas más eficiente pero no te diferencia mucho de otro buceador no DIR si lo que haces es bucear en arrecife a poca profundidad.

En cualquier caso, ambas decisiones son buenas para mi. Y los instructores y el resto de la comunidad de buceadores debe aceptarlo. Si tengo un estudiante muy avanzado, intento enseñarle algo que puede que él no conozca y doy el máximo. Si tengo un buceador de vacaciones, hago todo lo posible para cubrir sus necesidades. Y si tengo alguien que sólo quiere ir al caribe de vacaciones, me aseguro de que sea lo mejor que pueda él ser, sin forzarle ni convencerle a ser algo que él no quiere ser.

Últimamente esta idea tan simple se está volviendo más y más complicada. Más y más buceadores no respetan a esos que deciden no ser DIR o buceadores muy avanzados, sin darse cuenta de que son precisamente ellos con sus gastos en buceo, los que mantienen económicamente los centros de buceo y los sitios de inmersión.

Antes de empezar a bucear, decide tú mismo cómo quieres ser como buceador, pero deja a los demás bucear como quieran. La palabra “stroke” ha hecho muchísimo daño a este mundo. No importa si quieres bucear en arrecifes hermosos o si quieres bajar a 100 m. Cualquier decisión es buena y todos deberían respetarlo. Y si haces 200 inmersiones al año, no minusvalores al que sólo bucea una vez al año: ayúdale a mejorar y recuerda que son ellos los que permiten que la industria del buceo subsista.
