We already talked in a previous post about which courses can be done in your vacations without wasting them. In this occasion I´m going to talk about the, for me, ideal conditions for doing a diving course.
It sounds logic that the best places would always be a calm ocean with beautiful corals and fishes. Like that, at the same time you learn new things, you enjoy your diving: two for the price of one! However, I have taught in beautiful and clear waters and in terrible waters, and the truth, for teaching, I much prefer the second one.
If you are a student, think twice before heading to the coast for doing a course since it´s possible that your training would have more chances of improving your diving inland or in a sandbar than in the middle of beautiful and clear waters. I know there is lots of pressure from the side of students to do courses in the most beautiful possible place, but if explained, they may change their mind.
And I have my reasons:
– Nothing to get distracted with: one of the problems I had when I taught in the Caribbean is that lots of students spend more time looking at the beautiful fishes than doing what they were required. Where I teach nowadays (a lake with low visibility) my students have to dive very close to the bottom, so they have to practice much more their buoyancy. There comes a tree (yes, a sunken tree…), and they have to ascend, then come back down since the bottom can only be seen to maximum distance of one meter. So diving in a place where is nothing to see makes the entire dive a challenge and students focus much more in doing things right than looking for fishes (to make things even nicer, our lake bed is full of leeches, just to make sure nobody wants to touch it…)
– No chances to cheat: Who has never cheated doing navigation in the advanced (PADI) course? I still remember all my advanced diver reaching the buoy while doing navigation! Or who at the beginning of their OW course didn´t dive a few meters above the reef to make sure they didn´t touch anything? In low visibility or not so good places divers would really have to do things right (this is why they are there, isn´t it?), diving close to the bottom or getting perfect navigation skills, as the examples written above. The conditions makes that nobody can really cheat…
– More one to one teaching: normally few people go diving there so your instructor would be only for you or two divers. That makes training more complete for the diver…
– Different set of mind: when I taught in a nice place, my students used to ask me what we were expecting to see, and the exercises to do where just the excuse for enjoying diving. Where I teach now, my students LITSEN to all I say, and they do not mind doing things lots of times until it´s perfect. Why? Because there is nothing else to do and nothing to miss…
– Close by: I know you may think on doing a course as an excuse for a weekend of diving in the coast. But maybe you could think that doing the course at your local quarry, could only take a Saturday or Sunday, focusing only in improving your skills, and the following weekend you could just go to the sea and enjoy what you just learned…
– Freedom to choose the course location based on the specifics of the course: since you do not worry much about what the diver sees, but what he learns, then you may choose the perfect spot for the course (in these posts I explained what I consider the perfect spot for drift and for deep diving). And students do understand that, so you may really focus on what is best for the training rather than what would be nicer for the student. Of course if you want to do a Fish ID course, you should go to a reef…
I guess I could keep going with more reasons, but I think those could help you think the location of your next course. Maybe instead of telling your instructor to go to a beautiful reef, you may decide to do it in the local quarry of your region or on a sandbar.

¿Cuáles son las mejores condiciones para hacer un curso de buceo?
Ya hablamos en un post anterior sobre qué cursos se pueden hacer en vacaciones sin fastidiarlas. En esta ocasión voy a escribir sobre el que, para mí, es el lugar ideal para hacer un curso de buceo.
Ya sé que parece lógico que el mejor sitio sea un lugar con el mar calmado y con bellos corales y peces de colores. Así, a la vez que se hace el curso, se disfruta del buceo: ¡ dos por el precio de uno! Sin embargo, he enseñado tanto en aguas claras y bonitas como en aguas horribles, y la verdad es que, para enseñar, prefiero infinítamente más las segundas.
Si eres un estudiante, piénsatelo dos veces antes de ir hacia la costa para hacer un curso puesto que es posible que tu formación tenga más posibilidades de mejorar si lo haces en un lago o en una banco de arena que en un arrecife de aguas claras. Sé que hay mucha presión por parte de los estudiantes para hacer cursos en los lugares más hermosos, pero, si explicado, puede que cambien de opinión.
Y tengo mis razones:
– No te distraes con nada: uno de los problemas que tenía cuando enseñaba en el Caribe es que muchos de los estudiantes pasan más tiempo mirando a los peces hermosos que haciendo lo que deberían hacer. Donde enseño actualmente (un lago con muy poca visibilidad), mis estudiantes tienes que bucear muy cerca del fondo, por lo que tienen que practicar mucho más su flotabilidad. ¡Aquí viene un árbol !(si, un árbol hundido…) y los estudiantes tienen que ascender, sobrepasarlo y volver al fondo puesto que no pueden bucear mas allá de un metro o se pierde el fondo. Así, nadar en un lugar donde no hay nada que ver hace de la inmersión una experiencia donde todo se focaliza en hacer lo que hay que hacer, más que en mirar peces (para hacer las cosas todavía mejor, en el fango de nuestro lago hay miles de sanguijuelas, para asegurarme de que nadie lo toque…)
– Imposibilidad de hacer trampas: ¿Quién no ha hecho trampas en la inmersión de navegación del Avanzado (PADI)? Todavía me acuerdo como todos mis estudiantes del avanzado en aguas claras siempre llegaban a la boya y tenian una navegación perfecta. ¡ O cómo al principio del OW nadábamos un par de metros por encima del arrecife para evitar tocar nada y no tener que practicar nuestra flotabilidad más allá de lo necesario!. En lugares no ideales los buceadores sólo practican hacer las cosas de forma correcta y el instructor no tiene porque aceptar algo hasta que no esté perfecto (¿es por ello por lo que están allí, no?
– Más posibilidades de formación con un sólo estudiante: normalmente poca gente quiere bucear allí por lo que tu instructor estará sólo para ti o para dos buceadores como máximo. Esto hace la formación más completa para el buceador.
– Diferente expectativas: cuando enseñaba en un lugar muy bonito, mis estudiantes solían preguntarme sobre lo que esperábamos ver, y los ejerecicios a hacer eran sólo la excusa para disfrutar de la inmersión. Donde enseño ahora, mis estudiantes ESCUCHAN todo lo que digo, y no les importa repetir muchas veces los ejercicios hasta que están perfectos. ¿por qué? Porque no hay nada más que hacer y no se están perdiendo nada…
– Cercanía: Ya sé que puedes pensar que hacer un curso es una excusa para pasarte un fin de semana en la costa pero quizas podrías pensar en hacerte un curso en tu lago local, que sólo te llevaría un día, focalizándote sólo en mejorar tus habilidades… e irte el siguiente fin de semana al mar y practicar lo que has aprendido…
– Libertad a la hora de escoger el lugar de buceo basado en las especificidades del curso: puesto que no te importa mucho lo que el buceador vea, sino lo que aprenda, entonces el instructor puede escoger el lugar perfecto para el curso (en estos posts explique cuales considero los lugares perfectos para hacer un curso de corrientes y de profundidad). Y los estudiantes lo entienden, por lo que te puedes focalizar en lo que es mejor para ellos en vez de lo que es más interesante para el estudiante. Por supuesto, si vas a hacer identificación de peces, tienes que ir a un arrecife…
Supongo que podría continuar con más motivos, pero creo que estos son suficientes para hacerte pensar en done hacer tu próximo curso. Quizás en vez de preguntar a tu instructor para ir a un lugar bonito, puedes decidir hacerlo en un lago de tu región o en un banco de arena en el mar…
