Improve your diving / Mejora tu buceo

Lately a good number of distinctive specialties have been approved related tothe environment. We have courses about sharks, sea turtles and even about lion fish extermination in the Caribbean… And I´m pretty sure there are even more.

There is not much to say about them if you are interested in those subjects: they give you a good approach and, more important, help you to spot and understand their behavior from a diver point of view. However, if you do it in order to get a certification for your Master Scuba Diver card or for curiosity, just keep reading.

A couple of days ago one of my students told me that he was going to Thailand and I was offered to do one of those courses, which would help him to get his Master Scuba Diver recognition. I recommended that the money he was going to spend on this course, he should spend it in something else. Let me explain why:

• If you live or normally dive in a place with this kinds of animals, do any of them. I know you could read a book but the course would help you a lot in understanding them from a divers point of view. Your instructor would explain where they normally leave, specific species, how to spot them, season, etc. Lots of useful local knowledge that would help you a lot in your future dives.

• If you do not live or dive in places where those animals live, don´t do them. I know I seam quite radical, but getting information about local knowledge on sharks or sea turtles wouldn´t really help you to improve your diving nor use this knowledge somewhere else (the season, how to spot them, etc. could be very different in other parts of the world). Just read a good book or even ask to read the presentation or the manual the course is based on, but the course doesn´t really seam worth it…you may never see again the same kind of shark again.

As a general statement, I have met on my diving carer some divers that are prone to certification cards. They just want to get as many as possible, without realizing that the important thing is what you learn in the course. That means, if you want to became a Master Scuba Diver, do the courses that actually make you a better diver and think about what you need taking into account your diving profile. And doing a sea turtle course when you live 3.000 kms from the nearest dive site where you actually may see turtles, is not a good way…

Especialidades del proyecto AWARE

Últimamente han sido aprobadas un buen número de especialidades distintivas de PADI relacionadas con el medio ambiente. Hay cursos sobre tiburones, tortugas marinas, mantas e incluso para la erradicación del Pez León en el caribe…. y estoy seguro de que hay muchas más.

No hay mucho que decir sobre ellas si estás interesado en esos temas: te dan una buena perspectiva y te ayudan a entender mejor su comportamiento desde la perspectiva de un buzo. Pero si lo haces por curiosidad u obtener una certificación más, sigue leyendo.

Hace unos días uno de mis estudiantes me dijo que iba a Tailandia y que le habían ofrecido hacer uno de estos cursos. Dijo que podía estar bien y que eso le ayudaría a conseguir su reconocimiento como Master Scuba Diver. Le recomendé que utilizara su dinero mejor en otra cosa. Déjame explicar porqué.

• Si vives o buceas normalmente en zonas donde se ven estos animales, te recomiendo que hagas el curso. Ya sé que podrías leer un libro, pero hacer el curso te ayudará mucho más a verlos desde el punto de vista de un buceador. Tu instructor te explicará donde suelen vivir, especies específicas de la zona, como buscarlos, épocas del año, etc… una gran cantidad de conocimiento local que te será muy útil en tus futuras inmersiones.

• Si no vives o buceas raramente en zonas donde estén esos animales, no lo hagas. Ya sé que parece algo bastante radical, pero conseguir información local sobre tiburones o tortugas marinas no te va a ayudar a mejorar tu buceo y tampoco podrás utilizar ese conocimiento en ningún otro lugar del mundo (la época puede ser diferente, las costumbres de los animales variar, etc.). Es mejor que te leas un libro sobre ese animal o leas el material o la presentación del curso, pero no parece que el curso realmente te vaya a aportar mucho (¿qué mas te da saber que un tipo de tiburón duerme en un pecio determinado si nunca vas a volver allí y no vas a volver a ver ese especie de tiburón más?).

Como una reflexión general, he encontrado en mi carrera de buceo a algunos buceadores que sólo buscaban tener certificaciones, y cuantas más mejor, sin darse cuenta de que lo importante es lo que aprenden en el curso. Esto significa es que si quieres obtener el reconocimiento como Master Scuba Diver, haz los cursos que realmente te hagan un mejor buzo y piensa en que aspectos del buceo debes mejorar, teniendo en cuenta tu perfil como buceador (pecios, aguas frías, muros, etc…). Y hacerte un curso de, pongamos por ejemplo, tortuga marina cuando el sitio de buceo más cercano donde se pueden ver está a 3.000 kms de donde vives, no parece ser el camino…
