I used to work in a dive shop where this course was for free if you bought your scuba gear from them. The total cost for the shop was no more than 40 USD and they got a full set of equipment sold. If finally the student didn´t buy a minimum of a jacket, regulator set and computer, he had to pay the price of the entire course (around 60 USD). I thought it was a great idea for the client, because he could get a new set with a basic knowledge, and not only by trusting the salesman.

I´m not going to discuss if it should be or not a Diving Specialty, but I´m going to discuss if it´s worth it to do it before spending a big amount of money on diving gear. I bought my first diving gear when I had 20 dives and not much knowledge about diving.I was lucky (that´s the word) of getting everything right. Once I became an instructor I realized that this couldn´t be a good way of buying equipment: trusting a selling representative or looking on the internet about equipment without a basic knowledge. The second problem I had was my lack of knowledge about how it actually worked: I respected it as if it was a fine piece of technology and didn´t dare to touch or manipulate it. Again, once I knew how it worked, it was really easy to fix most of the problems and service some parts… diving gear is not complicated and if you know how it works, fixing and replacing some parts is a piece of cake.

And this is what this course is all about: learning how the system work, the difference between system and information about how to choose and do quick fixes to the most common causes of malfunction of your gear. This is what we actually teach: not only reviewing what the internet e learning says, but actually teaching how to fix the most common problems and, based on their needs, explaining which equipment is more suitable for them.

Wouldn´t it be right to spend 60 USD before spending a 1500 in good equipment? I think so…

Curso de especialista en equipamiento, un curso a hacer antes de comprar equipos

Solía trabajar en un centro de buceo donde te regalaban esta especialidad si comprabas un set de buceo con ellos. El curso costaba a la tienda menos de 40 Euros pero al mismo tiempo conseguían vender todo un set. Si finalmente el estudiante no compraba un mínimo de una chaqueta, regulador y ordenador, entonces tenía que abonar 60 euros a la tienda por el curso. Siempre he pensado que era una idea genial para el cliente, porque así, antes de comprar un set completo, tenía el conocimiento básico del equipamiento y más razones para elegir un equipo determinado, y no sólo el confiar en el vendedor.

No voy a discutir si debería ser una especialidad de buceo, pero si voy a discutir si es útil hacerlo antes de gastarte una buena cantidad de dinero en equipos de buceo. La primera vez que compré equipo de buceo tenía unas 20 inmersiones y no mucho conocimiento. Tuve suerte (esa es la palabra) de comprar todo más o menos bien. Una vez que me convertí en instructor me di cuenta de que esa no era forma de comprar equipos: no puede ser que creer al vendedor o mirar en internet y creer lo que otros habían dicho pueda ser la mejor forma de gastarte 1500 euros en equipos. Es necesario tener un conocimiento básico que no se da en ningún otro curso de buceo de PADI (y me atrevería a decir en muchos de otras agencias). El segundo problema al que me enfrenté fue al hecho de que no sabía nada de mi equipo: no me atrevía a tocar nada y lo reverenciaba como una pieza de tecnología avanzada. Una vez más, cuando aprendí como funcionaba, me di cuenta que todo era muy simple, y que era sencillo reparar o mantener la mayor parte de las piezas. Desmontarlo, arreglarlo y cambiarlo se hizo muy fácil.

Todo esto es lo que te enseñan en el curso: aprender como funcionan los diferentes sistemas, las diferencias entre ellos, información sobre como elegirlos y como arreglar y solucionar las principales causas de mal funcionamiento de tu equipo. 

En nuestro caso solemos ir más allá de simplemente revisar la teoría que el curso de e-learning te enseña: realmente enseñamos como funciona todo y formas de solucionar los problemas más habituales, además de conocer para que va a utilizar su equipo el estudiante y explicar las diferentes opciones que el mercado ofrece (eso sí, sin hablar de marcas o de equipo concreto).

¿No te parece adecuado gastarte 60 euros en aprender sobre tu equipo y como mantenerlo antes de gastarte 1500 en material? Yo creo que sí…
