I´m pretty sure you know cases where the auxiliary LPI was connected, it started inflating the auxiliary wing accidentally, provoked a runaway ascent and killed the diver (unfortunately, we had one case a couple of years ago in South Africa). Also, you may know cases in which the LPI was not connected to the auxiliary wing and the diver also died (the famous case in Dahab a few years ago). In that sense, leaving it connected or disconnected have its hazards and you never now what´s best.

I have a rule about when do I leave it connected or disconected. If I have breathable gases at the bottom, then I leave it disconnected. Why? If I had a runaway descend because the primary wing doesn´t work, I just need to swim hard and let me bump against the bottom. Once there, I can get back my breathe, have time to connect the LPI to the auxiliary wing and ascend. Like that, by not having it connected, I prevent a malfunction of the secondary (and a runaway ascend) but I´m able to use it anytime I need it.

If there is no bottom or I may not have breathable gases at bottom, then I have it connected. It´s more dangerous not to have any way to prevent descending below my MOD, if my primary wing fails, than the possibilities of having a runaway ascend because the secondary self inflates.

I know in tec diving its always about repetition and maintaining the same configuration all the time. This is the only case in which I vary my configuration regularly. Also, it could be prevented by inspecting all wings and inflators, but sometimes accident happens and a way of preventing it it´s by just avoiding the possibility.

Cuándo dejar conectado el inflador de tu ala secundaria.

Estoy seguro de que conoces casos en los que el inflador del ala secundaria estaba conectado, un mal funcionamiento provocó un ascenso descontrolado y el buceador murió (desafortunadamente tuvimos un caso en Sudáfrica hace un par de años). También puede que conozcas casos en los que el inflador del ala secundaria no estaba conectado, falló el primario, y el buceador también falleció al descender por debajo del MOD (está el famoso caso de Dahab hace unos años). En todo caso, dejarlo conectado o no tiene sus peligros.

Yo tengo una regla sobre cuando dejarlo conectado. Si tengo un gas respirable en el fondo, entonces lo dejo desconectado. ¿Por qué? Porque en el peor de los casos tendré un descenso descontrolado en el caso de que mi inflador primario no funcione. En ese caso, sólo tengo que nadar hacia arriba fuerte y controlar el contacto con el fondo. Allí puedo respirar tranquilamente, conectar el secundario y ascender. Así, el tenerlo desconectado me permite evitar un inflado no deseado del ala secundaria, evitando por tanto un ascenso descontrolado, y al mismo tiempo ser capaz de usarlo y conectarlo en caso de necesidad.

Si no hay fondo o no tengo un gas respirable para él, entonces lo dejo conectado. Es más peligroso no tener ninguna forma de evitar un descenso descontrolado debajo de mi MOD, en caso de que falle mi ala primaria, que las posibilildades de que mi ala secundaria se infle de manera descontrolada.

Ya sé que en buceo técnico siempre hay que mantener el mismo sistema y configuración, inmersión tras inmersión. Este es el único caso en el que varío mi configuración de manera regular. También sé que revisando tu equipo antes de bucear deberías evitar estos problemas, pero los accidentes ocurren y la mejor manera de evitarlos es no permitiendo que se dé la situación.
