Quite a good number of students have asked me what do I carry on my pockets when I dive. After years of changing, adding, removing, etc. I end up with a set of equipment that I consider necessary for most dives. This equipment may be carried on pockets, attached, or any other way.

Let´s review them:

• Snorkel: I use a classic foldable snorkel with an quick attach system. The good thing of this snorkel is that it woks as snorkel and also as a pocket mask (we talked about it in this post). You can also carry it directly attached to your mask, of course.
• Slate and a pencil: you never know when you have to write something, communicate with your students or divers, etc…
• A double eyed clip: it´s one of the most useful tools. You can use for everything: fixing broken strap, attaching something, etc.
• Compass: I like the ones attached to the console or on the computer itself. More about compass here
• Mirror: good for surface communication (in case you get lost) or for looking behind you.
• Finger reel: to attach something, mark the exit point, etc. One of the most useful piece of material ever used in diving.
• Buoy: mandatory for any diver… and a whistle  of curse.
• An extra mask: you never know when you or your students may loose the mask, break the strap or haver any other problema.

• Knifes: I use this system with two different cutting devices. Here more about diving knifes.
• Alimentary colorant: only when I dive in places with strong currents. If you get lost and they start searching for you, this colorant make you very easy to spot.
• Finally, I may carry a small torch, just to look in holes and crevices (but this part is for fun).

Of course, you have to decide what you may carry but always think on how to solve most of the problems that may arise in a dive. It may looks like a lot of things and that you may look like a Christmas tree, but the true is that most of it can fit in pockets, so it will not affect how streamlined you are. Please note that I put the small pieces inside a polyester bag that would help me to retrieve them easyly and fast, when needed.

Qué llevar en los bolsillos de tu jacket en todas tus inmersiones recreativas

Un buen numero de estudiantes me ha preguntado sobre lo que llevo en mis bolsillos cuando buceo. Después de años cambiando, añadiendo y quitando cosas, he llegado a un conjunto de objetos que llevo siempre cuando buceo. La mayor parte van en los bolsillos, atadas o combinadas entre ellas.

Veámosla:

• Tubo: Uso uno clásico que puede doblarse, guardar en el bolsillo y con un sistema de enganche rápido. Lo bueno es que este tubo funciona como tubo y también como pocket mask (ya hablamos de esto en otro post). Tambien puedes llevarlo directamente atado a tu máscara, por supuesto.
• Una tablilla y un lapiz. Nunca sabes cuando vas a tener que escribir algo, comunicarte con tus estudiantes o buceadores, etc.
• Un clip de doble ojo: una de las herramientas más útiles. Puede usarse para todo: arreglar un enganche roto, atar algo, etc.
• Brújula: me gustan las que están junto a la consola o instalada en el ordenador. Más sobre brújulas aquí.
• Espejo: bueno para la comunicación en la superficie (en caso de que te pierdas) o para mirar detrás tuyo.
• Un carrete de mano: para atar algo, marcar un punto, atarlo a la boya y ascender, etc. Un equipamiento muy útil.
• Boya: obligatoria en buceo… e incluye un silbato.
• Cuchillos: Yo uso éste sistema que me ofrece dos objetos cortantes diferentes. Aquí más información sobre cuchillos.
• Una máscara adicional: nunca sabes cuando vas a necesitar una. Puede que alguien pierda una, rompa la cinta o haya escogido una que se adapta mal y se esté llenando de agua todo el tiempo.
• Colorante alimimentario cuando hay fuertes corrientes: si te pierdes y empiezan a buscarte, el colorante hace muy fácil verte.
• Finalmente, a veces puedo llevar también una linterna, para mirar en oquedades, pero esto ya es más por diversión que por seguridad.

Por supuesto tienes que decidir que llevar, pero siempre piensa como puedes solventar la mayor parte de los problemas que puedan aparacer en una inmersión. Pueden parecer demasiadas cosas y pensar que si las llevaras todas parecerías un arbol de navidad, pero lo cierto es que la mayor parte puede perfectamente entrar en los bolsillos (las cosas más pequeñas las meto en una pequeña bolsa de poliester para tenerlas fácilmente localizadas y fáciles de coger), por lo que no afecta a tu trimado.
