I´ve already wrote once why snorkeling should be treated as a different activity, not as a pre-dive or pre-free diving sport. It´s perfect just on it´s own and people (like me) love to do it. I know most people do it just by themselves, without any kind of training. It´s true: it´s not rocket science but the course (done by someone that really loves it) it´s a cheap way of learning how to fin snorkeling, clear mask in a different way or even how to ascend and descend properly.

However, there is a piece of equipment most people that normally learn by themselves do not even know it exist: a snorkel jacket.

A snorkel vest looks a lit like a life-jacket: you insert your head and it goes around your chest. However, you have to inflate it by mouth through a tube. They are normally yellow or orange, very easy to spot from the distance. There are lots of companies that produce those vests, like this one from  ProSnorkel.

Why should you use one? First, in case of problems or getting tired you may inflate it and rest. Second, it makes you easy to spot by boats or any other traffic (it´s as easy to spot as a dive flag, since you will not be snorkeling with bad weather). Third, it makes your snorkel easier by keeping you afloat: you may stop at any time and let the current carry you without any need of holding your air in case you are negative. In addition, if you want to descend, you only have to deflate it by pushing the air out with your arms and you will be able to go down. It makes descend easier since you may carry weights that would make you slightly negative while the vest is deflated.

Finally, they are really cheap and lightweight, so it will not be a problem for your luggages.

Everywhere I go where I plan to snorkel, I bring mine: it makes me feel safer, easy to spot and relaxed… If you try once, you will always carry one.

Chaqueta de snorkel

Ya escribí en una entrada anterior porqué creo que bucear con tubo es una actividad diferente y que no debe ser considerada como la antesala del buceo o la antesala de la apnea. Es un deporte en sí mismo y algunas personas (como yo) adoramos hacerla. Ya sé que la mayor parte de las personas aprenden a hacerlo por ellos mismos, sin ningún tipo de formación. Es cierto: no es una ingeniería pero el curso (hecho por alguien que realmente sepa) es una forma barata para aprender a aletear correctamente, limpiar la máscara de una forma diferente a la del buceo, o incluso como limpiar el tubo antes de ascender.

Sin embargo, hay una pieza de equipamiento que las personas que aprenden por ellos mismos ni siquiera saben que existe: la chaqueta de snorkel.

Una chaqueta de snorkel se parece algo a una chaqueta salvavidas: insertas tu cabeza y va alrededor de tu pecho. Sin embargo, tienes que inflarlo con la boca a través de un tubo. Son normalmente amarillas o naranjas para ser fácilmente visto desde la distancia. Hay muchas compañías que los producen, como esta de ProSnorkel.

¿Por qué deberías usar una? En primer lugar, en caso de problemas puedes inflarlo y descansar. En segundo lugar, hace que seas muy fácil de ver por barcos u otro tipo de tráfico marítimo (funciona casi como una bandera de buceo, ya que no vas a hacer snorkel con mal tiempo y olas grandes que te hagan difícil de ver). En tercer lugar, hace el buceo con tubo más fácil ya que te mantiene a flote: puedes parar de aletear en cualquier momento y te mantendrá en la superficie sin necesidad de tener aire en tus pulmones en caso de que tengas flotabilidad negativa. Además, si quieres descender, sólo tienes que desinflarlo apretando con tus brazos la chaqueta y sacando el aíre. Incluso te facilita el descenso, ya que puedes añadirle pesos para ser ligeramente negativo mientras la chaqueta está desinflada (cuando la inflás, vuelves a estar positivo).

Finalmente, son muy baratos y ligeros, por lo que no van a molestarte en tus maletas.

Siempre llevo el mío cuando planeo hacer snorkel o voy a la playa: me hace sentir más seguro, fácil de ser visto por barcos lo que  me hace estar mucho más relajado. Si lo pruebas, seguro que llevarás uno en tus maletas.
