I always say that any thermal protection in diving is limited by the weakest point: if you use a drysuit but no gloves, you are going to be cold. Or no matter how thick is your wetsuit that if you do not wear a hood, you will be cold. I always have fun when I go on a diving trip and I see some thick wetsuits for costumers and then I see that they use fins without boots or socks, just bare feet.

Gloves are necessary anytime the temperature drops to 15-20 degrees. I always use the rule of minus two or minus three when I have to choose which one to wear: if my wetsuit is 5mm I´ll use a 2-3 mm gloves. If I use a 3 mm, wetsuit, I will not bring gloves with me…

Since I need to use my fingers, I do not want to use very thick gloves (unless I really need them), only the minimum needed to feel warm enough. If it becomes really cold, I prefer to use drysuit gloves but never more than 5 mm neoprene gloves. They are already quite uncomfortable for manipulating thing during the dive.

Guantes

Siempre digo que la protección termal en buceo está limitada por el punto más débil: si usas un traje seco pero no llevas guantes, vas a tener mucho frio. O no importa cuan grueso sea tu traje húmedo porque si no llevas una capucha vas a tener frio. Siempre me hace mucha gracia cuando voy a un viaje de buceo y veo como le entregan a sus clientes trajes gruesos de neopreno, pero no les dan o guantes o, sobre todo, calcetines o botas para las aletas.

Los guantes son necesarios en cualquier situación cuando la temperatura baja de 15-20 grados. Siempre uso la regla del menos dos o menos tres cuando tengo que elegir el grosor de los guantes: si uso un traje húmedo de 5 mm, unos guantes de 2-3 mm tendrían que ser suficientes. Si uso un traje de 2 o 3 mm, entonces no uso guantes.

Puesto que necesito utilizar mis dedos, no me gusta usar guantes demasiado gruesos (al menos que realmente los necesite), sino el mínimo para no pasar mucho frio. Si hace mucho frio, entonces prefiero utilizar guantes secos pero nunca más de 5 mm de neopreno. Ya son per se bastante incómodos para manipular cosas durante la inmersión…
